Artistic Influences and Cross-Views
Inspirations: Masters of yesterday and today
In an interview with Patricia Turnier of Mégadiversité Magazine, Annie Sène sensitively shares the artists who inspire her approach:
Annie Sene:
“Passionate and delicate painters like the Frenchman Jean-Honoré Fragonard – notably The Reader, which exudes infinite grace. I actually reproduced it and gave it to my mother.
I also like Paul Gauguin, especially Vahine no te vi, as well as Vincent Van Gogh's self-portrait.
It is impossible not to mention Leonardo da Vinci, especially Saint Anne and the Mona Lisa.
Frida Kahlo inspires me deeply. Her resilience despite chronic pain is remarkable. She conveyed strength through her self-portraits and vibrant colors.
The French painter Bangor also touches me with her depictions of the town of Coutances after the fighting in 1944, true historical testimonies.
I often return to Paul Gauguin, to his connection with Polynesia and Tahitian culture, so beautifully transcribed in his works. The colors he uses are powerful and expressive.
Finally, I have great admiration for Mawa Sène from Senegal, whose Cubist approach particularly speaks to me. Let's not forget that African art saved Western art.
Contemporary Resonances: Expert Views
Carlos Castanheira
During an exchange with Carlos Castanheira, a great collector of art and antiques in Montreal, the latter drew a parallel between the work of Annie Sène and that of Paul Cézanne:
“His work reminds me of Cézanne’s free representation of nature: living, almost abstract forms, carried by color.”
Professor Norman Cornett
Professor Norman Cornett, thinker and researcher in aesthetics, shares this vision:
"There is a Provençal light in Annie Sène's works, a deliberate lightness that moves away from detail to better convey the soul of the subject.
I am thinking in particular of his representation of the church on the island of Terceira.
His universe also evokes William Blake, with his mystical undercurrents and this spirit of activism which runs through his creations.
